Amey SRM awarded a contract to Bauer Group’s subsidiary, covering piling works to support the replacement of a bridge carrying the A533 Chester Road over the M56 motorway.

Bauer Technologies will install rotary bored piles for the new A533 replacement bridge structure, located on the M56 at Runcorn in Cheshire. The works are part of a £23M National Highways scheme to replace the existing expressway bridge.

The current M56/A533 Expressway Bridge was constructed in 1971 and has come to the end of its serviceable life. As a result, it is being replaced with a new 67m two span concrete bridge, with a life span of more than 120 years. The new bridge will include a single two-lane carriageway and a combined footpath/cycleway.

The bridge is situated between junctions 11 and 12 and forms a vital local link, providing access across the M56 to Runcorn from Preston Brook and Northwich.

The main contractor on the project is a joint venture between Amey and Sir Robert McAlpine (Amey SRM). It awarded Bauer Technologies the contract to install 1,200mm diameter piles, with rock sockets of varying lengths, into the underlying mudstone. The piles will be drilled into both sides of the motorway and the central reservation. They will function as bearing piles for the new bridge structure.

Bauer said it has designed the piles specifically to enable safe installation while working in close proximity the busy stretch of motorway, which will remain open throughout project works.

Bauer Technologies managing director Michael Jones said: “We’re delighted to be working with Amey Sir Robert McAlpine again, and are particularly pleased that we will be able to apply our expertise to this project and benefit from lessons learned whilst installing piles on the previous Amey Sir Robert McAlpine JV scheme, on the M6 motorway Junction 19, back in 2020.

“This is a challenging project and safety is of paramount importance, with our team working at the side of a live motorway; however, Bauer has vast experience with these types of projects and I’m confident that the project team will finish our scope of works safely, on time and to budget."

The bridge replacement scheme is expected to be completed in summer 2023.
